Means of Grace

Preamble

What funny definitions we give to:  grace.
“Unmerited favor.”
“God acting in our lives beyond what we can do for ourselves.”

Grace is God’s continuing creation in our lives.
Grace is God’s love acting in our lives.
(Sometimes we say one, sometimes the other.)

The Reason for Grace
But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.
Philippians 3: 20-21
The Spirit of Grace

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.
Philippians 2: 6-7 (NRSV)

The Model of Grace

But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
                                                                            Luke 5: 16

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus gotup, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
                                                                             Mark 1: 35
The life of Grace

After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee proclaiming the good news of God. “The time has come,” he said.  The Kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news.”
                                                                             Mark 1: 14-15

Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else - to the nearby villages – so I can preach there also.  That is why I have come.”
                                                                             Mark 1: 38-39
The Pace of Blessing

Every means of grace is like a hammer or a knife – each can be used to create and heal from sin, or to destroy.  The means of grace will be used to create and heal when we allow the Holy Spirit to act in our lives.

When we exclude God’s Spirit and attempt to operate, use, control a means of grace on our own, we can bring harm to ourselves or others – as if we put a child at the controls of a bulldozer or try to make a dead bird fly. A means of grace in our hands can have an effect in the world and in our lives opposite what God intends.

We can put a means of grace in our lives, making ourselves open to the life of God’s Spirit.
If we limit the means of grace in our lives, then we limit the Spirit’s actions in our lives, then we limit God’s continuing act of creation in our lives.  Look how beautiful God’s creation is! Why would we want to limit that life in our lives?

Effort and Prayer

Prayer is a channel of grace through which God will act in our lives and in the world.

           Life is effort

Effort and prayer do not exclude or limit each other

Prayer is the work.  The proper application of our effort: seeking grace.
